Songwriter, musician, producer, I'll take you on a time to step back in time capsule. I'm going to some of the techniques used in the great songwriters of the past to song craft. These techniques are even today after more than 70 years in the use of brand-new songwriter.
I have recently launched a telephone seminar on the craft of songwriting, has specifically dealing with text. We examined articles from the great songwriters of the past, such as Cole Porter, Jerome Kern,Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, and compared them with day to present songwriter. Interestingly, many of the things that were done back in the day to take done now to craft songs.
If you are a true songwriter, you know the value of studying the great masters of the past. True Songwriter's not make the mistake of thinking that the only "old songs". They know that the skill to write the text in a song, and goes a lot of work and takesskillful use of vocabulary.
So, here's the scoop. I have a Cole Porter song techniques, such as images, alliteration, assonance, dissonance, demonstrating action verbs, and much more. We also examined songs by Bill Withers, the Bee Gees, and Motown classics. All these songs had many similarities, and use the same techniques, no matter what they have been written ten years in.
For those of you who are too young to know who Cole Porter, he was a famous songwriter, the songs had taken onBroadway in the 30s, 40s and 50s, many of them have eternal classics.
He has to go a song called "Let's Do It," whose lyrics ...
"When Little Bluebird, who never said a word starts to sing in the spring, when little Bluebell at the bottom of the hollow ring ding dong ding dong begins. When the little blue clerk begins in the middle of his work, to sing a song to the moon above. It is nature, that's all, just tell us fall in love.
And that's why birds do it, beesdo it, even educated fleas on, let's do it, let's fall in love.
Cold Cape Cod clams, "against their will, do it even lazy jellyfish do it Let's do it, let's fall in love with."
Now I would like to point out how this song images, using alliteration, internal rhyme, repetition, and many other songwriters, all tools in the first verse and chorus.
Check out the pictures and the alliteration in the first row, where he says little Bluebird and Blue Bell at the bottom of the Dell. AndSpring sing, ding dong, and "Cold Cape Cod clams'.
Check out the pictures of the choir, when he says. Birds do it, bees do, even educated fleas do it, let's do it, let's fall in love. But look at it as he used repetition with the words "Do It" is inserted between alliteration and rhyme. He also uses internal rhyme to bees and fleas.
I love watching old films from the great songwriters of the past. If you have a chance to watch the movie called "Night andDay "is a fictionalized account of the life of Cole Porter. Other films I love are" Rhasody in Blue "on George Gershwin and" Yankee Doodle Dandy "on George M. Cohan.
These old films do not reflect the reality, but they are very entertaining and stimulating. I just love watching American Movie Classics. Songwriter's true to the old in new direction by carefully and creatively.
But now, here is where it gets interesting. Let's take a look at the new Katy Perry hit: "IKissed a Girl "and you'll be surprised at some of the same techniques used to see in their song, as in songs by Cole Porter.
First, it starts the song with pictures, how did Cole Porter. The first verse begins ...
"That was never the way I planned. It is not my intention. I was so brave, drink in hand have my discretion. It's not what I am, you just want to try on. I'm curious for you. Excited my attention.
I kissed a girl and I liked it the taste of her cherryChapstick I kissed a girl just to try it out. I hope my friend, it makes no difference. It felt so wrong. It felt so right. Do not Mean I'm in love tonight. I kissed a girl and I liked it I liked it "
You can only intellectual scene in your eye. The lyrics make you see a young girl hanging out at a party with her drink in his hand, a little tipsy. You can also imagine, there are many girls who dance together. The guys never want to dance anyway. The girls are always a littleplayful.
Suddenly, a girl catches her eye. She said that it was not what they used to, but it is always a bit of courage (and curious), after a few drinks. We all probably know a little about the college-age and wild parties. It is no secret that girls who usually dances modest, perhaps only at the end of the table when they get drunk a little.
Then we get the chorus ...
"I kissed a girl and I liked it." Notice how they put it in tension, as it is a wonder that they likeit. Then see how she uses alliteration in the line "Taste of Cherry Chapstick." Well, I was not there, but I'll bet that line was CRAFTED say: "Cherry Chapstick" will be held on lipstick alliteration. Remember Cole Porter to sing spring, ding dong, and Cold Cape Cod clams?
Then they inject a little more excitement with the words "I hope my friend, it does not matter" - because maybe he will, maybe he will not. They play with all kinds of emotions and fantasies here.
AndThey also have some conflicting opposition "It felt so wrong it felt so right." Good Girl Gone Bad. Finally, she ended with "I kissed a girl and I liked it," as it is a surprise. Then, she says, to admit to himself, "I liked it" - as a revelation.
As you can see, great songwriting techniques changed that much. If you want to take your songwriting to the next level, studying the great masters of the past give you a huge advantage over yourCompetition.
